How to make a weekly grocery list (with a template that actually works)
A grocery list seems trivial — until Thursday, when dinner is missing one ingredient and someone's driving to the store again. A good list is written from the meal plan, checked against the pantry, and ordered the way the store is laid out.
How do you write a grocery list from a meal plan?
1. Plan the meals first. The list is an output of the plan, never a starting point. Five dinners, lunches, breakfasts, snacks.
2. Extract every ingredient. Go meal by meal and write down everything each recipe needs — including the things you "definitely have" (you don't always).
3. Check the pantry and cross off. Two minutes at the cupboard removes the duplicate tins and the third bag of rice.
4. Group by category, in store order. Produce → bakery → meat & fish → dairy → dry goods → frozen → household. A category-ordered list halves time in the store and kills the back-tracking that produces impulse buys.
5. Add the running staples. Keep a note on the fridge (or in the app) where anyone who finishes the milk writes it down. Merge it in before shopping.
What does a weekly grocery list template look like?
Vegetables & fruit: the week's fresh produce, riskiest items planned for early-week meals Meat & fish: what the five dinners need, nothing speculative Dairy & eggs: milk, butter, cheese, yoghurt, eggs Carbs & dry goods: bread, pasta, rice, oats Pantry & sauces: oil, tins, spices, condiments Drinks: the boring essentials Household: soap, paper, bin bags — forgetting these causes the second trip
Frequently asked questions
Paper list or app? Whichever the whole family can add to. The fatal flaw of paper is that it stays in the kitchen while the milk-finisher is in the living room. A shared app list captures items the moment they run out.
How many items are on a typical family weekly list? 35-55 for a family of four shopping once a week. Consistently more than that usually means buying speculatively rather than from a plan.
Should I shop hungry? No — and not just folklore: studies consistently show hungry shoppers buy more calorie-dense food and spend more overall.
How Linden helps
Linden builds the list automatically from your week's meal plan, subtracts what's already in your pantry, groups it by store category, and lets the whole family add items in real time.
